Introduction to Colombian Narino Jose Gomes Caturra Washed Coffee Beans

These green coffee beans come from the Narino region of Colombia, grown by producer Jose Gomes. The variety is Caturra, and the coffee is processed using the washed method. Narino is Colombia's southernmost coffee-growing region, renowned for its high-altitude volcanic soils and cool climate, ideal for producing high-quality Arabica coffee. The following is a detailed description:

Place of origin and producer

Region : Narino is located in southwestern Colombia, at an altitude of approximately 1,600-2,300 meters. The region is where three Andean mountain ranges converge, creating a unique climate: long hours of sunshine, low temperatures, and active volcanic soils (such as the Galeras volcano), which imparts rich minerality and complex flavors to the coffee. Narino has a prevalent micro-milling culture, with many farmers, such as Jose Gomes, handling the entire process from harvesting to processing on their own farms.

Producer : Jose Gomes is a representative of small-scale farmers in Narino, focusing on cultivating the high-quality Caturra variety. His farm is medium-sized (approximately 4-5 hectares) and emphasizes hand-harvesting ripe coffee cherries to ensure consistent bean quality. While specific farm details are rarely disclosed, producers like those in Narino often obtain Rainforest Alliance or organic certifications, emphasizing sustainable agriculture.

Varieties and Treatment

Variety : Caturra is a variant of Bourbon, with small, high-yielding beans, suitable for high-altitude growth. In Narino, this variety is denser due to its slow ripening, resulting in a more intense flavor. Caturra is often blended with Castillo or Colombia varieties, but this particular variety is pure Caturra, emphasizing the pure expression of a single varietal.

Processing method : Washed. The process includes: hand-harvesting and peeling, 36-hour fermentation (in a concrete tank), three rinses with clean water to remove mucilage, and finally sun-drying in a solar drying shed or on a cement platform for 12-16 days. This traditional Colombian washed method highlights terroir, producing a clean, unadulterated flavor in cupping, and avoiding excessive sweetness from fermentation of the pulp.

This bean is a classic Narino representative, reflecting the essence of Colombian coffee: high quality and diversity.
