🌟 Why is it worth trying?
Panama's Mamacata Estate (often spelled Mama Cata Estate) is a very old and legendary top-tier specialty coffee farm in the Boquete region of Panama. Its reputation has consistently ranked among the top in international competitions (such as Best of Panama, BOP), sharing the same excellent microclimate as its neighbors, Hacienda La Esmeralda and Elida Estate.
History and Heritage: The Transformation of a Century-Old Estate
Origin: The estate's history dates back to 1911, making it one of the oldest coffee farms in the Boquete region. It was later taken over by the famous Panamanian coffee family, the Garrido family (currently operated by Jose David Garrido and his family). The name "Mama Cata" is in honor of the former owner, Catalina Fisher (affectionately known as Mama Cata).
Technological Management: Since 1997, the owner Jose David has fully modernized the estate. They were pioneers in introducing GPS positioning technology for micro-lot management, precisely tracking soil composition, microclimates, and coffee tree growth data for different plots, implementing extremely detailed individual harvesting and processing of micro-lots.
Superior Terroir
Location: Located in Los Naranjos, Boquete, Chiriquí Province.
Altitude: The core planting area is between 1,500 and 1,750 meters.
Climatic Advantages: Situated on the slopes of the Barú Volcano, it boasts fertile volcanic soil. Throughout the year, the area is influenced by the convergence of Pacific and Atlantic air currents, forming the famous "Bajareque" (a unique mist) which allows coffee cherries to ripen slowly at low temperatures, accumulating extremely high concentrations of sugars and complex acidity.
Geisha – A Classic Winner
The most famous core plot on the estate is called Toña (located at the highest altitude of about 1,700 meters).
The Geisha produced here, whether washed or the increasingly popular anaerobic/special fermentation (such as ASD Natural, AE Natural), exhibits extreme cleanliness. The classic flavor features delicate jasmine aroma, bergamot, mango, and elegant citrus acidity, having won top ten placements in BOP multiple times (and even the championship in the BOP Washed Geisha category in 2014).
1. Top-tier Product from the Coffee Holy Land
The Boquete region of Panama boasts a unique microclimate and fertile soil, making it the cradle of Geisha coffee worldwide. Mamacata Estate is situated here, continuously producing top-tier coffee beans thanks to its superior geographical environment and exquisite cultivation techniques.
2. Pure Washed, Ultimate Geisha Flavor
This coffee bean undergoes the classic "washed process," which maximizes the preservation and amplification of the Geisha varietal's inherent clarity. The washed process bestows it with a silky smooth texture and a clean, bright acidity.
3. Excellent Flavor Profile
Upon brewing, the coffee first offers the signature jasmine aroma of Geisha, followed by the refreshing notes of lemongrass and bright citrus hints of yuzu, with a warm, honey-like sweetness in the finish. The overall layers are elegant and clean, with every sip being a sensory delight.
💡 Brewing Suggestions
To showcase the delicate aroma and sweetness of this Panamanian Geisha, we recommend:
Equipment: Pour-over dripper (e.g., V60) to highlight its delicate floral and fruity notes.
Water Temperature: We recommend using hot water at 90°C - 92°C to fully activate the floral aromas.
Technique: Pour water evenly, avoid excessive agitation, and maintain a clean extraction.
