Washing
Kenya's Othaya coffee beans are famous for their unique flavor and high quality. They are mainly produced in Othaya town and its surrounding areas in Nyeri County in central Kenya. Otaya coffee is mostly produced using the Kenya 72-hour washed method (K72), which goes through three fermentation and washing cycles (24 hours each) to enhance the coffee's bright acidity and delicate taste.
Otaya coffee beans are characterized by high acidity and complex fruity aroma, which are as follows:
Acidity: Bright citrus and black currant notes, with hints of cherry tomatoes or black plums.
Sweetness and Complexity: Caramel and honey sweetness support, with red berry, pineapple, cocoa crumbs or spice aftertaste in the middle and back.
Feel: Medium to full body, some batches have a smooth texture like juice.
High altitude (1700-1950 meters)
Planting and volcanic soil further enhance the density and flavor complexity of the beans
Social and Environmental Impact
The Otaya Cooperative is Fairtrade certified and works to improve farmers’ livelihoods, such as providing medical support, educational resources and community infrastructure. In addition, the cooperative adopts sustainable planting methods to protect the local ecology and reduces exploitation in the middle links through direct trade.
Brewing Tips
In order to highlight the acidity and layered texture of Otaya coffee, it is recommended to use medium-light roasting and hand-brew or drip method.
Parameter recommendations:
Grinding degree: fine sugar granules
Water temperature: 90-93°C
Powder to water ratio: 1:15
Otaya coffee beans are the representative of Kenyan specialty coffee. Its high-altitude planting, strict K72 processing method and cooperative management model together shape its unique flavor. Whether you are a coffee lover pursuing bright acidity or a consumer who pays attention to social responsibility, Otaya beans are a choice worth trying. Specific batches can be processed through different processing plants under the cooperative (such as Gatuyaini, Mahiga) to explore the subtle differences in flavor
